Object Capture + AR: Buy Furniture with Confidence
The classic furniture-buying problem — looks perfect in the showroom, wrong proportions at home — is solved by Apple Object Capture API (iOS 17+), which lets you scan actual showroom furniture into accurate 3D models for AR placement in your scanned room before purchasing.
Object Capture Photogrammetry Workflow
In the showroom: photograph the furniture every 15–20° around 360° (24–26 shots), add bird-eye shots (8–10 shots), total 40–60 images at ≥4K. Process on Apple Silicon Mac (M1+) using PhotogrammetrySession with featureSensitivity set to high. Processing time: 5–20 minutes depending on image count.
Model Accuracy and File Size
Medium detail (50–100 images) yields ±1 cm accuracy at 50–200 MB USDZ file size — sufficient for interior design without excessive storage. Full detail (±5 mm) is available for precision applications.
AR Placement with RoomPlan
With both the room scanned (RoomPlan) and the furniture modeled (Object Capture), place the virtual furniture in the room, walk around it to check all clearances, measure distances to walls and doors, and swap material variants in Reality Composer Pro to test color options before ordering.
Thailand Shopping Workflow
Scan room with RoomPlan (5 min) → visit Index Living Mall, IKEA, SB Design Square → scan desired pieces → process USDZ on MacBook (10 min/item) → AR preview multiple layout options → purchase with confidence. Industry furniture return rate drops from 23% to ~5% with this workflow.
