Designing the Elderly Bathroom in a Smart Home: The Highest-Risk Room That Must Be Done First

Among all rooms in the home, the bathroom is the most dangerous for elderly people. Falls in the bathroom tend to be more severe because elderly residents are often in unstable positions — rising from the toilet or bathing on a wet floor — and the bathroom is a private space where the door is usually locked, meaning an incident may not be discovered quickly.

Floor and Material Specifications

The bathroom floor must achieve a Coefficient of Friction (COF) of at least 0.5 in both wet and dry conditions. Recommended options are matte-finish stone tiles or textured anti-slip tiles in 20x20 cm format, which drain water more effectively than large-format tiles. Avoid polished or marble tiles regardless of appearance — their wet COF can fall below 0.3, which is dangerously low. The shower floor and main bathroom floor should be level with no step difference.

Grab Rail Positions and Specifications

Grade 304 stainless grab rails with a 32–38 mm diameter should be installed at standard positions. Beside the toilet on both sides at 75–80 cm from the floor — a flip-up (fold-down) rail on the seated side and a horizontal rail on the other side. In the shower or bathing area — a horizontal rail at 90 cm height and a vertical rail beside the sliding door. Beside the wash basin — one short horizontal rail at 80–85 cm height. Walls where rails will be mounted must have blocking (reinforced backing) embedded in advance. For retrofit work, use wall anchors rated for at least 150 kg.

Lighting and Smart Home in the Bathroom

Bathroom lighting must be at least 200 lux during the day, with a separate night light providing 10–20 lux at 2700K so as not to disrupt sleep. Lights should open automatically via Motion Sensor when the elderly person enters — eliminating the need to find a switch in the dark.

For the bathroom mmWave Sensor, mount on the ceiling at the centre of the room or in an upper corner with full-room coverage. Choose a model with a moisture resistance rating of at least IP65. Configure it to alert if a fall is detected or if no movement occurs for more than 10–15 minutes.

Bathroom Door and Lock System

The bathroom door must be at least 80 cm wide, with 90 cm recommended, and must open outward rather than inward — if an elderly person falls against an inward-opening door it cannot be opened for rescue. The lock must be operable from outside in an emergency, or use a Smart Lock that family can remotely unlock via app.

Bathroom Renovation Budget

For retrofitting a standard 2.5x2.5 m bathroom, estimated costs are: anti-slip tile replacement 8,000–15,000 THB, installation of 3 grab rail sets 6,000–10,000 THB, IP65 mmWave Sensor 5,000–8,000 THB, Motion Sensor light 1,500–2,500 THB, door replacement with Smart Lock 12,000–20,000 THB. Total approximately 32,500–55,500 THB.

Questions & answers

Must grab rails in the bathroom be stainless steel, or can other materials be used?
Grade 304 stainless steel is the best choice for humid environments — corrosion-resistant and easy to clean. Anodised aluminium is also acceptable. Avoid chrome-plated steel or brass, which will corrode quickly in Bangkok’s tropical humidity.
If replacing the floor tiles is not possible, are there other ways to improve slip resistance?
Two options: Anti-Slip Treatment spray applied over existing tiles at 1,500–3,000 THB, which improves COF by approximately 0.1–0.2; and a rubber anti-slip mat in the shower area. Both are good temporary solutions, but tile replacement is the better long-term approach.
Does an outward-opening bathroom door create a hazard for people walking past?
Not with proper design planning. Install Soft-Close hinges and a wall-mounted door stopper to prevent hard swinging. In narrow spaces, a sliding door is an excellent alternative that eliminates the inward vs outward opening question entirely.
