Design education teaches that design work ends when the drawings are delivered. But in reality, actual life in a home consistently reveals things the design did not anticipate. Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) bridges this gap using real occupancy data — not assessments from the designer’s perspective.

Months 1–3: Settling In — Observe and Record, Do Not Optimize Yet

Every new home needs a settling-in period. Owners are still learning their workflow in the new space, and the Smart system is still in its learning phase: - Record Pain Points as they occur: what is difficult? What is inconvenient? Use an App or Voice Memo each time something is noticed - Allow the Smart system to learn Patterns without excessive Overrides - Observe which spaces are used more or less than expected - Record Thermal Comfort issues: which room is too hot, too cold, or too humid?

Months 4–6: POE Phase 1 — Analyze Data and Plan Adjustments

Months 6–12: POE Phase 2 — Implement Adjustments and Deep Smart System Tuning

After 6 months, the Smart system has enough data for deep Tuning: Smart System Optimization: - Automation Rules: adjust frequently-overridden Rules to match actual Patterns - Energy Schedule: adjust Pre-Cool timing to match actual Return Patterns (often found to be 30 minutes later than originally set) - Comfort Setpoints: adjust based on real Feedback, not Default values - Alert Thresholds: remove unnecessary False Alerts Space Optimization (Physical Changes): - Small scale: add Shelving, reposition Furniture, add Hooks and Storage - Medium scale: add Partitions, Window Blinds, change Light Fixtures - Large scale: minor Renovation (add Island, extend Counter) — only when genuinely necessary

POE Checklist: 20 Key Questions to Ask After 6 Months

Comfort category: - Is temperature and humidity comfortable across all seasons in every part of the home? - Are there any spaces that feel cramped, too hot, or too noisy?

Functionality category: - Are there daily activities that are difficult to perform comfortably in this home? - Is storage sufficient for the actual possessions accumulated over 6 months?

Smart System category: - Is there Automation that genuinely helps? Is there any Automation that genuinely disrupts daily life? - Does the Dashboard provide information that is actually used, or data that leaves the user unsure what to do next?

Questions & answers

Should POE be done independently or by a professional?
For residential SmartInterior, it can be done independently using a good POE Checklist alongside data from the Smart Home Dashboard. For more objective Feedback, the original Interior Designer can conduct a 2–3 hour Walkthrough with a Structured Interview. Typical cost: THB 5,000–15,000 for one POE visit — worthwhile given the quality of findings.
Where can the Override Log be read in Home Assistant?
In Home Assistant, go to Settings → Logbook to view the complete Event Log. Use Filter by Entity to see Override Events for specific Automations. Alternatively, create a Helper Counter that counts each Manual Override press on each Scene, then view Counter Values in the Statistics Dashboard.
If POE reveals that a room is barely used, what should be done?
Do not renovate immediately — first ask why. If the room is uncomfortable (too hot/dark/no Wi-Fi): fix the physical problem first. If the room lacks a Function that matches current needs: change the room’s Purpose. If the family’s life stage has changed: wait for the next Lifestyle Stage according to the Growing-with-Life Plan. How can an Occupancy Heat Map be generated from PIR Sensor data?
