Why Rainy Season Still Has Dust Problems
Many people assume rainy season flushes the air clean, but the reality is more complex. Rain falls in intervals, and during dry spells between showers, dust that has settled on surfaces gets re-suspended. Construction that continues year-round generates ongoing PM2.5 and PM10. High humidity allows dust and allergens to clump and accumulate in enclosed spaces. Rain also does nothing to address indoor pollution, which can be 2-5 times higher than outdoors.
In Bangkok, the rainy season also means waterlogging, musty odors, and mold releasing spores as airborne allergens. People with asthma and allergies must be especially vigilant during this period.
Air Quality Monitoring Tools You Should Have
Real-time air quality tracking is the foundation of effective preparation. An indoor air quality monitor should measure PM2.5, PM10, CO2, VOC, and humidity. Popular models compatible with Smart Home include the Xiaomi Air Quality Monitor, Aqara TVOC Air Quality Monitor, and Airthings Wave Plus.

Install sensors indoors at 1.0-1.5 meters height, at least 1 meter from heat sources and air conditioning vents, for the most accurate readings.
Air Purifiers and Indoor Dust Prevention
A HEPA H13 air purifier is indispensable during rainy season. Choose CADR appropriate for your room size (CADR = room area × 2.5). Install first in bedrooms and living rooms. Set Auto Mode so the unit adjusts fan speed based on real-time PM2.5 readings.
Beyond purifiers, inspect and seal gaps around doors and windows with rubber weather-stripping, especially during periods of high outdoor dust. Curtains and carpets accumulate substantial dust — wash them every 2-4 weeks. A HEPA-filter vacuum removes floor dust without re-suspending it.
Sealing Entry Points and Regular Cleaning
When outdoor AQI exceeds 50 or PM2.5 exceeds 35 μg/m3, close doors and windows immediately. Avoid running exhaust fans during high-pollution periods as they draw polluted outdoor air in. In the kitchen, always run the range hood when cooking to capture PM2.5 generated by stir-frying and deep-frying.
Clean your home consistently — wipe furniture surfaces with a damp cloth rather than dry dusting, which just re-suspends particles. Monitor indoor plants carefully: overly wet potting soil can become a mold breeding ground.
Protecting Yourself When Going Outside
On bad-air days, wear an N95 or KN95 mask that filters 95% of PM2.5 particles. Avoid outdoor exercise when PM2.5 exceeds 35 μg/m3, since faster breathing during exertion draws more dust into the lungs. When returning home, wash your face and hands and change clothes immediately before entering living or sleeping areas.
Check the AQI forecast each morning and plan outdoor activities after 10 AM or shortly after fresh rainfall, when dust levels tend to be lower than during morning rush hours.
