Why Bedroom Air Quality Matters More Than You Think
During sleep, your body undergoes cellular repair and metabolic waste clearance in the brain — processes that demand good air quality. CO2 is the most overlooked variable: every exhaled breath contains approximately 38,000–42,000 ppm of CO2, and in an enclosed bedroom without ventilation, ambient levels can climb to 2,000–3,000 ppm within 2–3 hours of occupancy.
Harvard research found that people sleeping in rooms below 950 ppm CO2 scored 61% higher on cognitive performance tests the following morning compared to those sleeping in rooms above 1,400 ppm CO2.
Key Thresholds to Know
For CO2 or carbon dioxide: below 600 ppm is excellent outdoor-quality air. The range 600–1,000 ppm is normal and acceptable for sleep. From 1,000–2,000 ppm, sleep quality is affected and ventilation is needed. Above 2,000 ppm is hazardous — open windows or activate an air purifier immediately.
For Relative Humidity: 40–60% is optimal for healthy sleep. Below 40% dries mucous membranes and skin, raising the risk of respiratory irritation. Above 60% promotes mould and dust mite proliferation.
For Seismic Vibration: the recommended alert threshold is PGA (Peak Ground Acceleration) above 0.05g. In Bangkok's soft soil areas, a lower threshold may be appropriate given amplified ground motion.

Using Smart Sensors Effectively
Step 1: Place CO2 Sensor and Hygrometer at bed height. Let them run for at least 24 hours to establish baseline readings before configuring alerts.
Step 2: Build automations in Google Home or Home Assistant. Link the CO2 Sensor to the Smart Plug controlling your air purifier or ventilation fan.
Step 3: Set push notifications for CO2 above 1,000 ppm, RH below 35%, or RH above 65% so you're informed even during deep sleep — the alert will be waiting on your phone when you wake.
