Why High Humidity in the Bedroom Is Dangerous
Ideal bedroom relative humidity sits at 40–60%. When RH exceeds 65% for extended periods, the environment actively promotes the growth of harmful microorganisms. In Bangkok, high humidity is most problematic during the rainy season (June–October), particularly in lower-floor bedrooms, rooms without large windows, or rooms with limited air circulation.
Health Effects of High Bedroom Humidity
The most visible impact is the growth of mould and dust mites. Dust mites reproduce fastest at RH 70–80% and release allergens that trigger sneezing, nasal congestion, asthma attacks, and chronic sinusitis. Mould growing on walls, ceilings, and bedding releases spores that accumulate in the lungs over time, causing long-term respiratory damage. Often-overlooked problems include damp-related skin inflammation in body folds, musty-smelling clothes and bedding that disrupt sleep quality, attraction of cockroaches and other insects that thrive in humid conditions, and accelerated deterioration of wooden furniture.
Choosing the Right Dehumidifier for a Bedroom
Dehumidifier selection depends on room size and moisture level. For rooms up to 20 sq.m., choose a model with 10–12 litres/day capacity to save energy and minimise noise. Key features to look for: operating noise below 40 dB (bedrooms require quiet), Wi-Fi app control, Auto Restart after power outages, Auto Defrost to prevent evaporator icing, and a built-in air filter to capture dust and mould spores. Smart Apps and Platforms for Humidity Control
Two main approaches exist. The first is using the manufacturer's app, such as Smart Life / Tuya — beginner-friendly with drag-and-drop automation, scheduling, and remote control. The second is Home Assistant, which is more powerful, supports devices from multiple brands, runs locally without internet dependency, and allows deeply customised automations. Practical Home Assistant automations: when RH exceeds 65%, power on the dehumidifier via Smart Plug; when RH drops below 60%, switch it off automatically; if RH exceeds 70% while you are away, send a Telegram alert saying “Bedroom humidity abnormally high — please check” and remotely activate the dehumidifier. Historical RH data helps identify which seasons cause peak humidity, enabling proactive rather than reactive management.
