Matter is an open-source smart home standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, and over 550 other companies in a single protocol. Matter-certified devices work with any compatible ecosystem without requiring proprietary hubs.
Matter 1.2 (released October 2023) added support for refrigerators, dishwashers, laundry washers, robot vacuums, and smoke/CO detectors. For SmartHomeThailand, the most significant addition is Matter over Thread, enabling low-power devices (sensors and switches) to operate on an IP-based mesh network.
Thread vs Zigbee: Thread operates on the same 802.15.4 radio as Zigbee but uses IPv6 addressing for direct IP network connectivity without a proprietary coordinator. A Thread Border Router — such as Apple HomePod mini or Google Nest Hub (3,000-6,000 THB) — serves as the gateway. Thread supports networks of 250+ nodes with lower latency than Zigbee in Wi-Fi-congested environments.
Home Assistant supports Matter natively via the built-in Matter integration (since HA 2023.9) and Thread via a Silicon Labs OTBR dongle (1,500-2,500 THB), enabling HappySmart to design homes that seamlessly combine Matter, Zigbee, and Wi-Fi devices within a single ecosystem.
For purchasing in Thailand: look for the Matter Certified logo on packaging or check the CSA Product Listing at csa-iot.org. As of 2025, over 4,000 Matter-certified device models exist worldwide. In Thailand, available brands include Aqara, Eve, Nanoleaf, Meross, and Switchbot — sold via Lazada and Shopee.
