Many Thai elderly residents live in rented homes or condominiums — whether from family members, former employers, or the general rental market. The core constraints are: no wall drilling, no additional wiring, and a requirement to return the space in original condition at lease end. These constraints do not mean Smart Home is impossible — they just require selecting appropriate technology.
Group 1: Wireless Battery-Powered Sensors — No Wiring Required

Group 2: Smart Plugs and WiFi Power Strips
To make existing appliances Smart without replacement: WiFi or Zigbee Smart Plugs connect to existing outlets, enabling remote shutdown of Air Purifiers, fans, or rice cookers — preventing forgotten-appliance fires. Price: 350–800 THB each. For elderly residents using medical equipment, a compact 600–900VA UPS at 1,500–3,000 THB plugs directly into any outlet.
Group 3: Non-Permanent Smart Locks
Adapter-style Smart Locks that mount over existing knobs without replacing the cylinder — such as Nuki Smart Lock or SwitchBot Lock at 3,500–6,500 THB — install without drilling and remove cleanly at move-out. They operate via Bluetooth at 3–5 metres, or via an optional WiFi Bridge for remote control. For elderly residents who tend to forget locking the door, adapter locks are an excellent renter-compatible solution.
Group 4: Portable Smart Hub
A Raspberry Pi 4 or Home Assistant Green at 2,500–5,500 THB simply plugs into a standard outlet — no permanent installation, fully portable at move-out. It serves as the central Hub connecting all sensors, Smart Plugs, and Panic Buttons, sending LINE Notify alerts to family on any abnormal event. All configuration is saved on an SD Card and backed up to a personal cloud. At a new home, plug in, reconnect WiFi, and the system is operational within 5 minutes.
