Thailand is heading toward super-aged society status by 2031. Most Thai families care for elderly relatives at home. A well-designed bedroom reduces fall risk, eases caregiver burden, and preserves independence. Universal design is not just accessible design for people with disabilities — it is good design for everyone across all life stages.
7 Universal Design Principles Applied
Equitable use: equal access for all ability levels — door width ≥90cm for wheelchair access.
Flexibility in use: adjustable-height beds 45–60cm to suit individual needs.
Simple and intuitive use: large light switches at 90–100cm height (no bending required) with clear symbols.
Perceptible information: night light path ensuring no dark areas at key points.
Tolerance for error: anti-slip rubber or tile flooring (R10+) with no thresholds.
Low physical effort: lever door handles (not knobs), single-lever taps.
Size and space for approach: corridor width ≥90cm around all sides of the bed, 150cm turning radius.
ADA/ISO 21542 Guidelines for Bedrooms
Doors: ≥90cm clear opening, threshold ≤6mm, swing outward from en-suite bathroom (so a fallen person cannot block the door), lever handles throughout.
Bed: 45–55cm from floor to top of mattress (easy to sit up from), ≥90cm clearance on both sides, grab bar alongside if needed.
Flooring: carpet not recommended (trip hazard); vinyl/PVC is flexible and cushions impact; anti-slip coefficient μ ≥0.5 (wet); no loose rugs or raised thresholds.
Wardrobe: hanging rail at 120–140cm (reachable without stretching), drawers at 40–90cm height, D-handles for ease of grip for arthritis sufferers.
Lighting for Low Vision
Adults aged 70+ require 2–3× more light than young people.
General lighting: ≥300 Lux throughout the room (not the 100 Lux of a standard bedroom), CRI ≥90, 4,000K for daytime activities, 2,700K in the evening.
Task lighting: bedside reading lamp ≥500 Lux with a dimmer.
Night light path: 1–2 Lux amber (2,200K) at baseboard level (15–30cm high) along the route from bed to bathroom — illuminating without disrupting melatonin production.
Contrast: wall/floor/furniture colour contrast ratio ≥3:1 for low vision — e.g., light walls with dark-coloured grab bars, and bed colour contrasting with the floor.
Smart Home Integration
Smart switches: press/voice/motion sensor options — Lutron Caséta or Shelly 1 + Home Assistant, controlled from a large bedside tablet.
Fall detection: Seeed Studio MR60FDA1 (60GHz radar, nothing to wear) detects falls and no-motion timeouts, alerting caregivers via LINE.
