Converting an existing room into an elderly-appropriate Smart Wellness Room does not require a full demolition. The Remove–Keep–Add method saves time and budget by evaluating each item systematically.
Step 1: REMOVE — What Must Go
All rugs and carpet: rug edges are easy to trip on, absorb water and become slippery when wet, and obstruct wheelchairs and walkers.
Sharp-cornered furniture: glass tables, thin-framed metal chairs, and wall-mounted shelves above 1.5 m all risk injury on impact during a fall.
Floor lamps and trailing cables: trip hazard; a toppled lamp can start a fire.
Inward-opening bathroom door: if the elderly person falls against it the door cannot be opened from outside. Replace with a sliding or outward-opening door.
Large wall mirrors: if shattered can cause severe lacerations, especially dangerous if the elderly person falls against them.
Step 2: KEEP — What Can Stay
Solid wood bed at 45–50 cm height: still suitable. Check leg stability and add side grab rails.
Sliding-door wardrobe: easy to open, no hinged panel blocking the walkway. Keep as-is.
Air conditioner and fan: no need to replace. Just verify the remote is reachable from the bed.
Bedside table with drawer: functional as-is. Only add a Panic Button affixed to the side panel.
Step 3: ADD — What to Install
Anti-slip vinyl flooring COF ≥0.5 (8,000–15,000 THB): can be laid over the existing floor without removing tiles. Installation in one day.
Ceiling-corner mmWave Sensor (3,000–4,500 THB): 24-hour monitoring without capturing images.
Motion Sensor Lights ×3 (1,500–3,000 THB): under bed, bathroom corridor, and bathroom entrance.
Wearable and wall-mount Panic Buttons (1,500–3,000 THB): beside bed, in bathroom, and neck lanyard.
Bathroom grab rails ×2 (3,000–5,000 THB): beside toilet at 75–80 cm and in shower zone at 90 cm.
Medication Smart Plug (800–1,500 THB): addresses the common problem of elderly persons forgetting medication.
Before-and-After Budget
Removal (labour + disposal): 2,000–5,000 THB. Physical renovation (vinyl floor + grab rails + new door): 15,000–30,000 THB. Smart Home devices (mmWave + Motion Lights + Panic Buttons + Smart Plug): 7,800–12,000 THB. Total: 24,800–47,000 THB for a 3×4-metre room.
