Fall Detection and Movement Monitoring
A 60 GHz mmWave sensor installed at key positions throughout the home forms the core of the elderly care system. These sensors detect breathing, minor movement, and falls without using cameras, preserving the dignity and privacy of elderly residents.
When the sensor detects a fall or prolonged stillness in a high-risk zone such as a bathroom or staircase, it immediately sends an alert to family members' smartphones specifying the exact location in the home.
If no response is received within two minutes, a Home Assistant automation can automatically call a pre-set emergency number or contact a caregiver.
Proactive Health Environment Monitoring
Beyond fall detection, the HappySmart elderly care package monitors daily living conditions actively.
Xiaomi air quality sensors in the bedroom and living room measure temperature, humidity, and CO2, alerting family members when conditions are unsuitable for elderly occupants — for example when temperature exceeds 30°C or CO2 climbs above 1,000 ppm.
TP-Link Tapo P115 smart plugs track the power consumption of key appliances such as the kettle, microwave, and refrigerator. Unusual patterns — a kettle not used in the morning, for instance — can gently signal to family that something may be wrong, without requiring constant check-in calls.
Safe Independence with Smart Locks and Adaptive Lighting
The Aqara U200 smart lock with fingerprint and NFC allows elderly residents to leave home without carrying keys, eliminating the risk of being locked out. Family members can view the door access log through the HomeKit app at any time.
Adaptive Lighting automatically adjusts brightness and colour temperature throughout the day — bright and cool during the day to reduce drowsiness, warm in the evening to support sleep. Research consistently shows that appropriate lighting reduces fall incidents in elderly populations.
An automatic night light activates the moment the mmWave sensor detects someone rising from bed, safely illuminating the path to the bathroom without requiring the resident to search for a switch in darkness.
