Why the Safety Stack Needs Four Layers, Not a Single Device
A common mistake in elderly safety system planning is purchasing a single device in isolation — a panic button alone, or a camera alone. Each has blind spots: panic buttons fail when the elderly person is unconscious; cameras cannot reliably distinguish a fall from bending over to pick something up; and standard PIR sensors stop detecting a person who is sitting still. An effective safety stack layers multiple detection methods so each layer compensates for the weaknesses of the others.
Layer 1: Fall and Inactivity Detection
The first layer uses 60GHz mmWave sensors installed in the bathroom and living room — capable of detecting a fallen, motionless person. Home Assistant logic defines that if a person is detected in the bathroom for more than 20 minutes without significant movement, a first-level alert fires. The recommended device is the Aqara FP2 mmWave Presence Sensor at approximately 2,800–3,500 baht per unit, mounted 2–2.5 meters high and covering a 5×5 meter area. An under-bed radar sensor in the bedroom adds a second detection point: if the elderly resident leaves bed at night and does not return within 15 minutes, an alert triggers.
Layer 2: AI Camera with Local Processing
The second layer uses IP cameras processed through Frigate NVR running on the Home Assistant server — no data leaves the home. Frigate’s AI model detects persons and can define zones to trigger alerts when someone appears in a risk area such as near the staircase. The Reolink RLC-810A (8MP PoE) at 1,800–2,500 baht is recommended for living room, corridor, and kitchen coverage. The bathroom must never receive a camera — use mmWave there to preserve privacy. For large living rooms, the TP-Link Tapo C510W fisheye camera at approximately 1,500 baht provides full-room coverage.
Layer 3: Panic Buttons and Audio Alerts
The third layer is active: panic buttons the elderly person can press deliberately. Install at minimum three — one IP67 waterproof button in the bathroom, one beside the bed, and one in the living room. The Aqara Wireless Mini Switch (Zigbee, approximately 600–900 baht) integrates directly with Home Assistant. When pressed, a single automation triggers simultaneously: LINE Notify to all family members, whole-house lights on, siren activated, and a camera snapshot sent alongside the alert message.
Layer 4: LINE Notify Integration
LINE is Thailand’s primary communication channel with over 52 million users. Integrating LINE Notify with Home Assistant is straightforward via the HACS community store. When any trigger fires, the system sends a LINE message containing the event description and timestamp, a camera snapshot, and a link to the Home Assistant dashboard for live camera viewing. A family member in another province sees the situation immediately without needing a phone call. Set up a dedicated family LINE group and define which alert severity levels reach which recipients.
Total Cost and Installation Timeline
Estimated costs for a 4-layer safety stack in a mid-sized Thai home: three mmWave sensors at 8,000–10,000 baht; three IP cameras at 5,000–8,000 baht; three panic button locations at 2,000–3,000 baht; a Home Assistant server (Raspberry Pi 4 plus SSD) at 4,000–6,000 baht; and integrator installation and configuration at 5,000–10,000 baht. Total: approximately 24,000–37,000 baht with an installation time of one to two days.
