What Is PM2.5

PM2.5 stands for Particulate Matter with diameter of 2.5 microns or less — approximately 30 times smaller than a human hair. This size allows particles to bypass nasal hairs and airway membranes, penetrate directly into lung alveoli, and in serious exposure, enter the bloodstream.

The WHO safety standard is 15 µg/m³ as a 24-hour average. Multiple areas in Bangkok record levels of 80–120 µg/m³ during dust crisis periods.

Sources of PM2.5 in Thailand

Open burning and rice straw burning in northern and central Thailand are the main sources during dry season (December–March). In Bangkok, diesel vehicles, industrial facilities and construction sites are significant contributors throughout the year.
