Why Sequence Matters
The most common mistake in elderly Smart Home projects is buying devices first and planning later. The result is incompatible equipment, unaddressed actual risks, and an elderly person who doesn’t know how to use any of it.
From experience with over 200 installations in Bangkok and surroundings, HappySmart found projects that complete all 6 phases achieve 91% actual usage rates vs only 58% for those skipping steps.
Phase 1: Survey and Risk Assessment (1–2 weeks)
Core activities:
- Walk every room with a Fall Risk Assessment specialist
- Identify Hot Spots: bathroom, night hallways, stairs, kitchen
- Assess elderly health: chronic conditions, medications, balance
- Interview family: what worries them most? Is someone home with them?
- Measure spaces, check electrical systems and internet stability
Deliverables:
- House Risk Map showing High/Medium/Low risk points
- Prioritised requirements list
- Preliminary budget estimate
Phase 2: System Design and Device Selection (1 week)
Core activities:
- Match each risk to the appropriate device
- Design a Floor Plan showing Sensor, Camera, Hub positions
- Choose Smart Hub platform: Home Assistant / Google Home / Line LIFF
- Prepare Bill of Materials with pricing
- Present plan for family approval
Device selection criteria:
- Easy for elderly to use (large buttons, clear audio)
- Compatible protocols (Zigbee / Z-Wave / Matter)
- Local processing — not 100% cloud-dependent
- Warranty ≥ 2 years
Phase 3: Infrastructure Preparation (3–7 days)
Core activities:
- Install or upgrade Wi-Fi to cover all rooms (prioritise 2.4 GHz for IoT)
- Install Smart Hub (Raspberry Pi 5 + Home Assistant or commercial hub)
- Run wiring for Smart Switches and Smart Plugs if needed
- Test Signal Strength at every planned sensor location
Cautions:
- Check circuit Max Load before adding devices
- Assign a separate Network SSID for IoT for security
Phase 4: Installation and System Setup (1–3 days)
Installation order (Critical Path):
- Smart Hub → test connectivity
- mmWave / PIR Sensor → adjust Sensitivity
- Door/Window Sensor → set Alert Time
- Smart Plug / Switch → set Automation Rules
- Smoke / CO / Water Leak Sensor → test Alert
- Panic Button → test Notification delivery
- Smart Camera (if any) → adjust angle and Privacy Zone
Day-1 Automation Rules:
- No movement > 2 hours during daytime → Alert family
- Fall Pattern detected → immediate Alert
- Front door opens 01:00–05:00 → Alert
- PM2.5 > 50 µg/m³ → auto-start air purifier
Phase 5: Training — Elderly and Family (1 day + follow-up)
For elderly (2–3 hours):
- How to press Panic Button and when to use it
- Using Smart Speaker voice commands
- Meaning of different Alert sounds
- What the system does automatically (nothing required from them)
For family (1–2 hours):
- Reading Dashboard and Activity Log
- Receiving Alerts via LINE or App
- Checking camera and Sensor status
- Steps to take when receiving an emergency Alert
Follow-up after 2 weeks: Review issues and adjust Rules
Phase 6: After-Sales Service and Optimization (ongoing)
Monthly:
- Check Battery Level for all Sensors
- Review Alert Log for False Positives
- Update firmware
Quarterly:
- Assess changes in elderly health
- Adjust Sensitivity and Rules based on real behaviour
- Report to family
Annually:
- Review devices due for upgrade
- Evaluate ROI from incidents detected and prevented
This 6-phase process is the difference between a system abandoned within 3 months and one that works reliably for years.
