The Warning Window: A Short but Valuable Gap
When an early warning system signals an incoming earthquake, you have between 30 seconds and 2 minutes depending on how far you are from the epicenter. The greater your distance, the larger the gap between P-wave detection and S-wave arrival. For residents 50 to 100 kilometres from the epicenter, the window can reach 60 to 120 seconds, which is enough time to take meaningful protective action.
What to Do in Those Seconds
Regular rehearsal lets the body respond automatically without conscious decision-making. In the first 10 to 15 seconds: stop all current activity immediately, set down sharp or hot items. From 15 to 30 seconds: move under a sturdy table or stand against a load-bearing wall away from windows; if outdoors, move clear of buildings. From 30 seconds to 2 minutes: if your Smart Home system has not already responded, close the gas valve manually and exit through the pre-planned evacuation route.
ThaiQuake vs Earthquake Network
ThaiQuake is the official TMD app. Data reliability is very high because it comes directly from government monitoring stations, but alert delivery typically takes 60 to 180 seconds after an event. It is best suited for post-event situation tracking and receiving authoritative information.
Earthquake Network was developed by an Italian team and uses crowdsourced smartphone accelerometer data from around the world. Its main advantage is speed: alerts can arrive within 5 to 20 seconds in some cases. It supports the Thai language and has a growing user base across Southeast Asia.
