Before an Earthquake: Building Household Readiness
Preparation during normal times is the most valuable investment a household can make. Start with a structural inspection of your home, checking columns, beams, and load-bearing walls for cracks or deterioration. Secure heavy furniture and shelving to walls so they cannot topple onto residents. Apply safety film to all glass surfaces because broken glass is among the most common injury causes in earthquakes. Prepare an emergency bag containing drinking water, dry food, medications, a flashlight, spare batteries, and copies of important documents. Designate a meeting point outside the home and rehearse the evacuation plan with all household members at least twice a year.
During an Earthquake: Act Fast and Correctly
If you are indoors, immediately get down to a Drop-Cover-Hold On position: kneel, cover your head and neck with your hands, and shelter under a sturdy table or against a load-bearing wall away from windows. Do not run outside while shaking continues because falling debris from buildings is far more dangerous than staying in place. If you are outdoors, move immediately away from buildings, power lines, and large trees. If driving, stop in an open area away from bridges, tunnels, and overhead electrical lines.
After an Earthquake: Check and Prepare for Aftershocks
Once shaking stops, first check yourself and everyone in the household for injuries. Check for the smell of gas; if detected, open windows and evacuate immediately without using light switches or open flames. Inspect electrical systems for damaged wiring. Photograph all damage for insurance documentation. Expect aftershocks that may continue for hours to days after the main event and remain prepared.
