Home Energy Management: The Central Brain of Home Power Use
A ’Home Energy Management (HEM)’ system is a software layer that connects to Smart Meters, Smart Circuit Breakers, and all IoT devices in the home to create a real-time energy overview and control power delivery for maximum efficiency.
The ’Energy Intelligence Layer’ of HEM operates at three levels: ’Monitoring’ — collecting power data every 15 seconds; ’Analysis’ — processing to find patterns and anomalies; and ’Control’ — commanding devices automatically according to set rules or AI learning.
Smart Scheduling: Timing Appliances for Minimum Bills
High-consumption home appliances like washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers typically operate without supervision. The HEM system sets ’Smart Schedules’ for these devices to run during ’Off-Peak TOU’ hours from 22:00–08:00, when electricity costs 30–50% less than during ’Peak Hours’.
’Pre-Cooling Strategy’ for air-conditioners has the system lower room temperature ahead of Peak Hours beginning, so the compressor works less during expensive periods and maintains coolness via the home’s thermal insulation instead.
’EV Charging Management’ for homes with electric vehicles schedules charging during the cheapest electricity periods and pauses temporarily when household load is high to prevent exceeding Circuit Capacity.
Energy Forecasting: Predicting Bills in Advance
The HEM system’s ’AI Forecasting Engine’ analyses 3–6 months of historical power consumption data alongside advance weather data to forecast monthly electricity bills 30–90 days ahead with 85–92% accuracy.
When the system forecasts a higher-than-normal bill, it sends an ’Early Warning’ prompting behaviour adjustments in advance, along with a specific ’Energy Action Plan’ — such as raising AC temperature by 1 degree or reducing Standby Load at 3 points.
Load Balancing: Balancing Load to Prevent Outages
’Dynamic Load Balancing’ prevents simultaneous power use from exceeding Circuit Capacity by automatically queuing high-consumption appliance starts. If three air-conditioners are about to start simultaneously, the system staggers starts 30–60 seconds apart, reducing ’Inrush Current’ and extending appliance lifespans.
’Circuit Priority Management’ assigns priority levels to circuits — bedroom and security system circuits carry the highest priority, while non-essential appliance circuits are automatically reduced when total load is high.
Monthly Energy Report
The system automatically generates a ’Monthly Energy Report’ showing key KPIs: per-room electricity costs, the top 5 highest-consuming appliances, comparisons with the previous month and nearby homes, and Carbon Footprint reduction achieved.
For a 3-bedroom Bangkok home, a full HEM system installation reduces electricity bills by 25–40%, approximately 1,200–2,500 THB per month, recouping investment within 18–30 months.
