Elderly Thai living alone face multiple safety risks that families worry about: falls, accidents, missed medications, and disorientation. A Smart Longevity system designed specifically for solo living gives elderly residents independence while giving families genuine peace of mind.
Emergency Button: Physical SOS Trigger
Oversized Zigbee emergency buttons installed in the bedroom, bathroom, and living room. On press: Home Assistant sends a LINE message with room name and timestamp, turns on all home lights, sounds an alarm through the smart speaker, and auto-dials family emergency contacts via VoIP (Linphone/SIP).
For falls where the elderly person cannot reach a button, Radar Fall Detection (post 23051) from millimeter-wave radar serves as an automatic backup.
Smart Pill Dispenser: Medication Management
Hero Automated Pill Dispenser sorts medications by dose time automatically, alerting with audio and LED indicators. Missed doses trigger LINE OA family notifications. For the Thai market where Hero is not yet directly available, MedMinder and TabSafe are alternatives. A cost-effective local option: HA Calendar Reminder plus Voice AI TTS announcements (as described in post 23030).
Geofence: Location Monitoring for Cognitive Risk
For elderly with mild cognitive impairment risk: HA Zone combined with GPS from Apple Watch LTE, Garmin LTE, or a small GPS tracker. When the person exits the defined geofence (home plus 500m radius) → immediate LINE alert to family.
For normal outings to a nearby market, family members can grant temporary geofence expansion via LINE OA, preserving the elder’s autonomy while maintaining oversight when appropriate.
Smoke and CO Detection
Nest Protect detects smoke via split-spectrum sensor and CO via electrochemical sensor, integrated with Home Assistant via Google Home. On detection: LINE family alert, loud alarm, emergency lighting activation, and voice direction to exits via smart speaker.
Smart Gas Valve: Preventing Forgotten Gas
A Smart Gas Valve (such as Shuto) installed on the main gas line allows Home Assistant to close it automatically: 30 minutes after no kitchen PIR activity, when smoke/CO detectors trigger, or when geofence shows the elderly person has left home.
Activity Check: Safety Through Absence of Signal
No activity from PIR, door sensors, or smart plugs between 07:00 and 10:00 → HA sends a Yellow LINE alert. If the elderly resident does not confirm within 30 minutes → escalates to Red alert with emergency contacts. This activity-absence protocol catches unexpected events no sensor directly monitors.
